Do we have to take exams?

Although exams are not compulsory we do encourage our dancers to prepare for them.

Exams give dancers a goal and also a sense of pride and accomplishment upon reaching

these goals.  Exams also help to give a guideline for both parent and student to see that

they are progressing as they should.  Following a recognized syllabus also helps ensure

that children are learning in a safe and logical manner, giving them a strong base with

the strength and technique that they need to acheive at one level before attemping the

more demanding challenges of the next.

~Studio and Official RAD & ADAPT Exams are offered in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Acrobatique.

What about Festivals/Competitions?

Festivals are an exciting opportunity for students Age 6 and up to perform in front of a

new audience and receive an adjudication.  Dancers perform as a group, so classes with

be divided into groups according to whether or not you choose to take a Recreational or

       Competitive dance program.

Festivals for beginners are not based on 1st , 2nd , 3rd but rather on a standard marking

system where each group is awarded a medal standing ~ Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc ~ so

each routine is working to achieve their own best effort and standing.

Where/When would these festivals/competitions be held?

Each spring there are a number to choose from ~ Red Deer, Olds, Sherwood Park,

Calgary, Banff, Edmonton ... With the Red Deer and Olds Colleges being so close and such

great facilities, these are always first choices.  Beginning students are entered into 3

Festivals which gives them great variety and an opportunity to see that their routines

improve with each performance as they grow more comfortable on stage!

Are there any 'Recreational Only' classes for my child?

Yes, there are!  At this time, we have scheduled Hip Hop and Acro classes that are strictly recreational with no exams or festivals.  Also, all Ballet levels have technique classes only where students are given the option of taking a studio exam only which will give all dancers the incentive of testing their knowledge without the pressure of an official Royal Academy Examination.

What about costumes?

Our Studio has a costume supply which helps to keep costume prices to a minimum. We do also purchase some new  costumes for festivals each year, so students have a combination of some new and some re-used or re-purposed.

Costumes are supplied for Christmas Performances. Younger students are

given the option of outfits that may be kept and worn after performances are done.

Will I be required to sew?

Sewing may be required to some extent but will be very limited.  As your child may

become more involved, so may the sewing ~ however, we do have sewing bees where

parents all help each other. If you don't sew, you may be able to help cut, glue or do the

coffee run!  Sewing lessons will also be made available for those who would like to learn!

What if my child needs extra help?

Senior students are always very willing to give extra help ~ Phone numbers are available

from the front desk for those who are available for tutoring.  Working this way has

proven to be very beneficial for new students, for extra Exam help or for fine tuning work

for Festivals.  We have found it to also be a great opportunity for building relationships

between younger dancers and older role models!

Are there fundraising opportunities available?

Yes! Throughout the year we have a variety of fundraising opportunities available. Opportunities include selling the Chocolate, CoccBrooks, Christmas Wreaths, Community Discount Cards, and more!  Dancers may also be involved in galas, preview shows or our Princess Tea!
